Breast Cancer Causes and Treatment

Posted in Healthy Stuff at 10:33 am by admin

About Breast
Cancer:

Breast cancer is a type of uncontrolled growth of abnormal
cells that can develop in one of several areas of the breast,
including the ducts that carry milk to the nipple, the small
sacs that produce milk (lobules) and the nonglandular
tissue.Breast Cancer is estimated that 192,200 women and 1,500
men in the United States will be diagnosed with Breast cancer in
2001. Though rare in men, Breast cancer accounts for 31% of all
cancer diagnosed in women. Breast cancer is a disease in which
cancer cells are found in Breast tissue. There are numerous
types of Breast cancer. For example, ductile cancer, found in
the cells of the ducts, is the most common type of Breast
cancer. Cancer that begins in the lobes or lobules is called
lobular cancer. Treatment will depend on the type of Breast
cancer and stage of the disease. There are also many
non-cancerous (benign) Breast diseases as well.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer:
1.A lump or thickening in the breast or under the arm. 2.A
clear or bloody discharge from the nipple. 3.Crusting or scaling
of the nipple. 4.Nipples that don’t stick out (inverted).
5.Redness or swelling of the breast. 6.Dimpling on the breast
skin resembling the texture of an orange. 7.A change in the
contours of the breast, such as one being higher than the other.
8.A sore or ulcer on the skin of the breast that does not heal.

Causes of Breast Cancer:
The exact cause of cancer remains a mystery. Over twenty
percent of those who have cancer never know why. The primary
parts that are involved are the natural parts of food, tobacco,
occupational hazards, genetic composition and food additives.
Other agents that have been linked with cancer are ionizing
radiation, chemicals in the air and diet, vitamin deficiency,
high-fat diet, stress and environmental conditions.

Diagnosis:

Biopsy: Used to diagnose tumors, a biopsy tests cells
removed surgically or through aspiration for microscopic
examination.

Cytology test: A test that shows the shedding of abnormal
cells. A good example of a cytology test is pap smear.

Imaging techniques: low dose x-rays such as those used in
a mammogram can detect early Breast cancer. Ultrasound scanners
can also produce images of organs.

Chemical testing: Detect the presence of blood in the
feces or elevated levels of enzyme acid phosphates in the blood.

Ultrasound: A new ultrasound technique used after a
mammogram can help reduce uncertainty about whether a Breast
mass is cancerous or not.

Home Care Suggestions: -Avoid tobacco in all forms,
synthetic hormones, particularly estrogen, excessive alcohol,
caffeine. -To minimize hair loss apply cold packs to the scalp
while taking radiation or therapy. -Engage in mild exercise such
as walking and make it part of your daily ritual. -If you ever
receive a serious diagnosis of any kind, one of the most
important things you can do is to free your mind of daily
concerns.

Popular Types of Noni Fruit Drinks

Posted in Healthy Stuff at 10:08 pm by admin

Noni fruit drink is available at brick-and-mortar health food
stores as well as online vendors. It is also available from
individual members of multi-level marketing companies, but it is
recommended that you buy from an established seller.

Noni fruit drink can be expensive - sometimes $60 per liter, but
a little goes a long way. Recommended dosage is only one or two
ounces daily, on an empty stomach for best absorption.

You can buy any of three basic types of noni fruit drink. The
purest form is made of pure noni juice. There are no pulps,
seeds, leaves, or bark. It contains the highest concentration of
nutrients. Bear in mind that the label might claim the contents
to be 100% noni juice, but there might still be water added.
(The added liquid reduces the pungent taste.)

The second purest form is pureed noni fruit. This is whole noni
fruit, minus the seeds. The concentration of nutrients is not as
high as with pure noni, but there is a much wider array of
nutrients, affording you some of the more fibrous parts of the
fruit. When buying noni juice made by this method, look for a
70% juice concentration or higher.

The third form of noni juice is powder to be mixed with other
liquids, such as raspberry juice, cranberry juice, or orange
juice. It usually takes 10 to 20 pounds of noni fruit to make
one pound of powder. To re-hydrate, just pour in powder at a
volume rate 1/10th to 1/20th that of the desired volume of
liquid. It is available in bulk for about anywhere from $20 to
$60 a pound.

Mineral Supplement: Minerals in Your Diet!

Posted in Healthy Stuff at 8:43 pm by admin

The food is the raw material for the body. Minerals are one of
the important components of human nutrition. Minerals are
grouped under two categories macro (the ones which we need in
large amounts) and trace (the ones ne need in small amounts).

Here are some minerals which should be an important part of
your diet.

Calcium: It is used for bone formation, muscle movement
(cramps may result from calcium deficiency) and burning fat
(some studies point towards taking calcium to lose weight).Over
consumption of protein leads to calcium loss from the bones.

It is usually found in large quantities in dairy products,
sea food with bones, non-vegetarian foods, soy/tofu and green
leafy vegetables.

Must Read: Learn how calcium promotes weight loss at
http://www.weightloss-health.com/calcium_weightloss.htm

Phosphorus: It is required for formation of genetic
material, bones, maintaining the acid base balance, and for
metabolism.

It is found in legumes and nuts.

Sodium: Very important to maintain the fluid levels and
acid base balance of the body. Perspiration vomiting, loose
motions etc tend to upset the acid base balance. People with
iodine deficiency can additionally use sea kelp which is also
good source of iron

It is found in small quantities in most foods. The best
sources are rock salt and sea salt.

Potassium: It helps maintain the water balance in the
body, maintains blood pressure, nerve impulses. People with
kidney problems need to be very careful about potassium levels.

Some foods which are good sources are banana,
melons,potatoes,tomato and orange.

Zinc: It is responsible for fertility, skin, hair and is
part of many enzymes.

It is found in nuts, whole grains, legumes and non-vegetarian
foods.

Iodine: It is responsible for being a part of the
hormonal system and many hypothyroids may benefit from consuming
natural forms like sea kelp.

It is also found in the iodised variety of salts.

Copper: A trace metal found in many foods. It is needed
for manufacturing haemoglobin and many enzymes.

Copper is also available when water is stored in a copper
vessel overnight and consumed in the morning.

contact lenses 101

Posted in Healthy Stuff at 12:43 am by admin

Contact lenses are a great alternative to glasses. Many people
who live an active lifestyle have enjoyed the ease and
convenience of contacts now for many years. Today, there is an
extensive choice to best fit your need.

Contacts now have so many options; it may seem a bit
overwhelming to find the right pair for you. In truth, there are
a few things you should know when shopping for contacts. But
when done right, you will find much better prices and varieties
than your optometrist could provide.

After a visit to your eye doctor, you can ask for a prescription
of your eyes. This little sheet of paper will tell you
everything you want to know about the shape, size, and power of
your eyes. First, you will need to decipher the abbreviations on
your prescription

PWR: this is the strength in diopters your new lenses must have
in order to sharpen your sight to an acceptable level.

BC: Known as back curvature, this number indicates the shape of
your cornea and helps with overall fit and comfort.

DIA: The distance in milliliters across your contact lenses

CYL: For those of you with astigmatism, this measures how
advanced it is.

AXIS: Also for astigmatism patients, this helps the contacts
correct the oval shape of your cornea.

ADD: For bifocal users, this will show the additional strength
in the section of your contacts used for reading or close
viewing.

COLOR: If you have chosen contacts that will enhance or change
your eye color, your desired color will be shown here.

BRAND: If your doctor has prescribed a certain brand for you, in
most cases, retailers are required to sell you only that brand.

Now that you know what your prescription means, you can now shop
for the best contacts for you, there are some things to note
though. After talking to your doctor, you should be aware if you
need soft or gas permeable contacts.

Soft contacts are quite common and take less time for your eyes
to adjust to. Because they contain anywhere from 25% to 79%
water, they are more comfortable but less durable. Some also
allow you to sleep in them. Soft contacts are generally replaced
more often than gas permeable lenses. The life expectancy of
soft contacts vary from once a day to once every few months.
This factor depends on upkeep and how sensitive your eyes are.

Gas permeable lenses are made from a rigid silicone which is
considerably more durable and longer lasting. In the long run,
gas permeables are slightly more expensive up front but less
expensive over time since one pair will last a couple of years
compared to soft contacts lasting an average of around a month.

A new craze today is color changing or enhancing contacts. Some
people add this feature to their already existing prescription
and some even buy them simply for decoration. Color can come in
a variety of intensities.

Tinted contacts have a visible tint meant to enhance the natural
color of your eyes. this type looks best on light colored eyes.

Color tints have an opaque solid color pattern around the center
of the lens which can dramatically change eye color. The color
pattern is based off of natural color occurrences in the iris.
The center is clear so you can see. These lenses come in colors
such as blue, hazel, green, and even violet.

Costume tints have been used in movies for special eye effects
and are now available to the general public. Options include
white-out, spiral, cheetah, and alien. These are obviously not
for everyone.

With this information, shopping for the best contacts can be a
fun and rewarding experience. You are almost guaranteed a better
price and more ease than conventional ordering from your
optometrist. The best way to find the best prices is to browse
around and compare prices. Be careful of scammers and stay with
reliable companies.

For the Kids With Nowhere to Turn

Posted in Healthy Stuff at 12:44 pm by admin

One of my favorite songs is “You`re Never Alone” by Hatebreed because the lyrics say, “this is for the kids who have no where to turn, who have nothing to live for, you think you haven’t the will to persist, you have to search within yourself. While listening to that song I was inspired to write how it is effective in bodybuilding. Being a teen is rough and sometimes coming an end to oneself is what develops your character. There is light at the end of the tunnel if you keep going.

Everyone goes through problems in their life, but it`s what you do about them that defines who you are. The first thing you need to do is find the source of the problem. Who or what caused all the grief? Don`t become discouraged with yourself if the situation is out of your control, but if you feel the problem was indeed your fault, you need to do everything in your power to find a way out.

When looking for a cure, a positive attitude is much better than a negative one. Keeping a positive attitude is much easier said than done, but is crucial if you want to overcome the problem. Go slow, take small baby steps to get where you are going, and develop a list of goals you will try to accomplish for the day. If your goal is to get better grades, you need to decide if you`re spending enough time doing your homework. WRITE DOWN that you need to spend more time doing your homework. That way you remind yourself what needs done to improve your grades. It`s the same way with any other goal, writing your goals down on paper will give you the motivation to mend on whatever goal you are trying to improve on.

You`re not going to get everything right the first try so having a backup plan will keep you from failing completely. Setbacks are inevitable, but you have to keep moving on no matter the circumstances. A good example is deciding what you want to be when you get older. Many times you go to college expecting to major in a certain area, and then decide that you want to switch to something different. If the person has a backup plan then that person would avoid the decicion of what their going to be all over again.

Life is hard and sometimes it feels like there is no way out. This happens to almost everyone so don`t get discouraged when you encounter problems. Remember, have a positive attitude, keep a list of how to overcome your problem slowly, and always have a backup plan in case your main goal fails. Until next time, cya!

Guidelines for Security and Safety of Health Care and Community Service Workers

Posted in Healthy Stuff at 4:25 pm by admin

Guidelines for Security and Safety of Health Care and Community
Service Workers “Carmel and Hunter suggest that some psychiatric
workers may be at a higher risk for injuries from assaults than
the risk for injuries from all causes in the country’s most
hazardous industry (Lipscomb and Love, 1992)”. I found this
statement quite disturbing and the stigma attached “goes with
the job” The article was a thorough look at causes, planning,
intervention and evaluation of violence in the workforce guess
what hit me the most was to implement a plan such as this it
would not be cost feasible. The amount of recording, various
studies, assessment and interventions not to mention the
training involved make it impractical if not impossible found
after reading this article I imagined myself wearing a
bulletproof vest equipped with a cell phone, video camera,
tazer, pepper spray surrounded by the national guard with my
client, not my idea of an effective therapeutic melliu. The risk
for violence is real and should not be ignored or tolerated but
I don’t believe all of the actions in the article would prevent
this.

The Real Secrets of Weight Loss

Posted in Healthy Stuff at 1:30 pm by admin

For most people, finding an effective way to lose weight
and keep the weight off seems like a daring and confusing
adventure straight out of a movie. In actuality, it’s nowhere
near that difficult. By following a natural lifestyle the weight
will melt away.

Secret 1: Exercise more

The healthiest way to lose weight is not with crash diets, fad
diets or sudden bursts of exercise. The body likes slow changes
and maintenance of those changes. For example, someone who has
not exercised for years should not rush into running three miles
every day. Exercise needs to be increased slowly.

Introduce changes gradually. But introduce them! Even relatively
light exercise such as a short walk may be beneficial if done
frequently. Any amount of exercise is good if you are doing none.

The hidden secret for exercise is to make it fun!

Thankfully, each of us has different likes and dislikes
concerning exercise and, therefore, exercise in a variety of
ways. It is essential that you find an activity or a couple
activities that are enjoyable, appropriate, accessible and
affordable for you. That way you are far more likely to build
them into your routine and continue regular exercise, despite
the inevitable setbacks due to illness, family commitments,
schedule changes, etc.

A couple popular ideas to choose from may include walking,
swimming, gardening, sports, weight lifting, running, yoga,
pilates, any form of aerobics either in a class or by yourself,
hiking, biking, tai chi, etc. You can imagine that a complete
list would be rather extensive. It is possible to find
activities you really enjoy that make it possible for you to
feel your best and lose weight.

Secret 2: Eat Right

Many people believe it is best to reduce their calorie intake by
eating less. It is not necessary! This usually ends up with the
person either feeling starved, getting bored, getting weaker or
giving up completely in desperation. This in turn can lead to a
yo-yoing effect of the weight loss - weight gain cycle.

Eating an appropriate diet is the best way to lose weight. Not
all weight is fat. Some is water and some is accumulated toxins
stored from inappropriate food or chemicals added to food.
Cutting calories only may lead you to still be storing water
weight and toxins, which will impede your weight loss and keep
you feeling less than optimal.

The optimal diet for humans is fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds,
and perhaps some grains. It is best to eat a wide variety of
these foods and eat them to your heart’s content. If you eat
mostly fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and grains you will
experience weight loss and elevated health.

The key is to eat as much of your food as you can in its fresh,
uncooked state. Raw food is tasty, nutritious, filling, and you
can literally eat as much as you would like without gaining
weight. You will have the energy to exercise and feel better
than you thought possible.

Foods to cook lightly to enhance their digestibility are
potatoes, sweet potatoes, hard squashes, and sometimes broccoli,
cauliflower, and artichokes. Nuts and seeds may be soaked and
sprouted to enhance their digestibility, nutrition, and flavor.
Grains may be sprouted for the same reasons. Manna breads and
Ezekiel breads are available that are made without flour and are
sprouted.

Food to avoid are all fried foods, heavily cooked or overcooked
food, sugar, salt, flour products (bread, donuts, cereal,
bagels, etc.), soda, canned or bottled juices, and any food out
of a box, can, or bottle.

Buy fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts (unroasted,
unsalted), seeds, and whole grains. Meat of very high quality
(organic), some dairy (organic, raw), and eggs (organic) are
health promoting to some people and decrease vitality in others.
You will have to find your balance with these through time and
testing. Raw honey, bee pollen, and other bee products are also
high energy and health enhancing foods that promote weight loss.

Secret 3: Weigh Yourself Only Once Each Week

>From the day you decide to lose weight, weigh yourself once a
week before breakfast. Keep a record of this weight and see the
pattern that develops. You may opt for a scale that tests for
water and fat percentages as well as weight to have a better
idea how your body is changing.

Every single time a person exercises and eats health-enhancing
food, their body rebuilds itself with healthier tissue and
discards fat and toxins. Avoid being impatient and remind
yourself that the results will slowly manifest themselves.
Remember that there are no shortcuts to losing weight in a
healthy and reasonable way.

Women need to remember that due to hormonal changes throughout
their menstrual cycle their weight may fluctuate more than
expected. Water retention, eating habits, hydration, recent
exercise, and hormones will all play their roles and women may
notice unusual weight gain or loss seemingly overnight. Be
patient, do not stress, and the changes will even themselves out
and weight loss will continue.

Secret 4: Sleep

Sleep is the great equalizer. All your body systems depend on
proper sleep for their function. Weight loss, hormone patterns,
thought clarity, energy, creativity, patience, detoxification
and toxin removal, proper growth and repair from exercise, etc,
all depend on quality sleep.

Go to sleep as early as you feel tired, but at least before
11pm. Before 10pm is even better. It is said that the hours of
sleep before midnight count as double of those had after
midnight. Try to get a good, restful sleep and awaken naturally,
if possible. If you must awaken to an alarm, at least make sure
you awaken at the same time each day and are not waking up
feeling groggy and fatigued. If you need more sleep, get it!

Other helpful secrets:

Drink enough water daily so that you do not feel overly thirsty,
dry, or light headed.

Have a rhythm to your day that works for you. If you awaken
every day around the same time, go about your day in the same
way, exercise, sleep, eat, and work the same ways, your body
gets used to the rhythm and it is easier for you to maintain a
healthy lifestyle. It is much more difficult if every day is
different and you need to plan and structure then restructure,
trying to make things work and fit things in. It is easier to
let healthy choices go and get caught in the stress cycle.

Enjoy time outdoors every day, if possible. In sun, rain, snow,
hot, or cold, the outdoors is good for the body. Being outside
is invigorating and inspirational. The Vitamin D produced by
your skin from the sun is excellent for building bones and
maintaining energy. Don’t be fooled and wear sunscreens
constantly, get your sun and outdoor exposure every day!

Eat when hungry, drink when thirsty, exercise when you feel
energetic, work when you feel creative, sleep when you are
tired, and play as much as you can. Having fun with your life
and enjoying it is a great way to find balance and losing excess
weight will come naturally.
